NEW WORK
Eleanor’s recent work is informed by the significant losses she has experienced over the last three years. Confronted by changes to the foundations of her own life, alongside the intimate and complex stories she encounters within her therapeutic practice, she has found herself reflecting on the beauty and pain held within memory. As the child of first- and second-generation immigrants, her work is also shaped by experiences of cultural displacement, both inherited and lived, and by the fragmented pull between different cultures and ideas of belonging. She is interested in the way memories are not fixed records but living narratives, shifting and changing each time we recall them. Memories help us create stories that make sense of ourselves, often shaped by where we stand in our lives at the time. A memory of a former lover, for example, may be experienced as tenderness, infatuation, longing or bitterness. There is a delicate balance between joy and regret within these recollections. Through painting, Eleanor explores the tension between these seemingly opposing states, and the idea of pain existing within tenderness, with nostalgia acting as both a wound and a form of connection. Fragments of experience sit alongside one another, merging and overlapping as memories often do. Through these layered compositions, Eleanor considers the fluid nature of memory and identity, exploring how personal and inherited histories shape the stories we tell about ourselves, our sense of belonging, and the different versions of self that continue to coexist within them.

ABOUT
Eleanor Barreau works both commercially and as a fine artist. Eleanor has had solo shows both nationally and internationally. She has also worked on large-scale projects including stage set design, album artwork and murals. She uses painting and drawing to illustrate an idea, whether it be her own or a client’s. Eleanor gained an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art. She lives and works in London.

Her current studio practice explores memory, loss, longing and identity through layered figurative painting. Informed by personal experience and her work as a psychotherapist, she is interested in memory as a shifting narrative and in the ways tenderness, pain and nostalgia shape our understanding of ourselves. Alongside her fine art practice, Eleanor has worked on murals, album artwork, advertising, hospitality interiors and large-scale stage and set design.
